March 2025

Single logs from this month:

ANNOUNCEMENT: Final Seasons for "Mixed Field", "Front Yard Meadow", "Cemetery" and "! Main Street Bridge !"

Just like last year, my region is among the last to see the start of spring, with the cherry trees not having started to bloom until the end of this month. With barely any rain but generally high humidity, the few days in which temperatures exceeded 16°C were uncomfortable to conduct in field trips on and most of the vegetation appears to tolerate those conditions as much as my head that's prone to massive migraines during such periods.

As such, most of the early-spring butterflies still haven't been active, with only three individual jump-starters having made an appearance so far:

Not many bugs are active either at this time either, so April likely will be the proper start of this observation season.

I should mention that this season already makes me a little anxious due to the recent developments mentioned in my announcement above. Sadly, those worsening conditions now are spreading to one of my main zones and will affect the local populations of C. splendens and C. mercuriale negatively, as one of their "safe spots" during mowing periods, situated just right between Z II and Z III on the other side of the bike path's bridge, was cleared entirely, with little to no vegetation in and around the stream remaining. I suspect that most eggs and nymphs were trampled on and destroyed in the process, as well.

The initial oblog listed "Pieris rapae" in place of Anthocharis cardamines due to a poor description provided by my mother who made this observation. This was corrected on 04 April, 2025.
